Tools to Support Emergency Room Personnel in the Treatment of Individuals with Autism

There are four ASERT developed resources included here: Instrument to Prepare for Acute Care of the Individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Emergency Department and a brochure that includes Tips for Assessing Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Emergency Department. The purpose of this instrument is to allow individuals with autism spectrum disorder, their families and their caregivers to inform emergency department health care providers on the nature of their condition and how best to manage their acute ailments in this setting. The final resource is a video training for emergency room personnel along with an accompanying training manual.

The training video can be accessed by clicking here.

The purpose of this instrument is to allow individuals with autism spectrum disorder, their families and their caregivers to inform emergency department health care providers on the nature of their condition and how best to manage their acute ailments in this setting. The form should be filled out in advance of the visit and given to hospital personnel upon arrival at the emergency department. The purpose of the brochure is to provide a quick reference guide for emergency department staff in order to make the experience of treatment in these environments more comfortable and accommodating to individuals with autism. This tool was created by the ASERT Collaborative as part of the Education of Pre-Hospital Responders and Emergency Room Personnel Project.  The training video and manual introduce emergency department personnel to the unique characteristics and needs of people with autism spectrum disorder.  Understanding the relationship between an increased state of anxiety or stress and the characteristics of autism can enhance the successful delivery of service by emergency department personnel and avoid escalation of unwanted behavior and compromised care. The training manual is below along with the other resources.
