The ASERT Resource Center serves as Pennsylvania’s leading source for up-to-date and accurate information and resources for individuals with autism, their families, the community and the professionals who support them. Contact the ASERT resource center to speak with a resource specialist who can help you learn how to discover and access resources in Pennsylvania. The resource center is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

PA Autism Census Update

The PA Autism Census Update, conducted by the Autism Services, Education, Resources, & Training Collaborative (ASERT) provides a count of the number of individuals with autism who are receiving service in Pennsylvania. It identifies where these individuals live and which systems are supporting them. This information can be a powerful tool to help you, your family, decision-makers and others in your local community to understand autism in Pennsylvania by highlighting where and how individuals with autism are receiving services.

What does this mean?

In Philadelphia County, most individuals with autism receiving services were Black or African American (48%). About 1 in 4 individuals with autism receiving services in Philadelphia County were White/Caucasian (25%). A smaller proportion of individuals with autism receiving services in Philadelphia County were Asian (2%) or “other” (5%) when compared to the rest of Pennsylvania, but a larger proportion were from Hispanic/Latino (19%) in Philadelphia County compared to 7% in the rest of Pennsylvania. This comparison between county and state demographics can be helpful to understand what specific or additional challenges your county may face.

What does this mean?

In Philadelphia County, the majority of individuals with autism receiving services are between the ages of 5-17. However, the number of adults over 21 years old is increasing as the population of individuals with autism receiving services ages.
