The Thing
Part of the First Saturday Horror Series

1982 | R | 1 hr 49 min
Directed by John Carpenter
Starring: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David

Helmed by the indomitable directing skills of John Carpenter this return to John W. Campbell’s short story “Who Goes There?” (the same source material for 1951’s The Thing from Another World) turns up the science fiction terror heat in Antarctica. The action opens on a group of researchers caught off guard by sounds of gunfire and explosions. They witness a helicopter in seeming pursuit of a dog which they take as a ward to their station. Mystery mounts as the scientists try to uncover the intentions of that helicopter and the remains they discover. What ensues is a gripping master study of sci-fi body horror that remains a classic to this day. Anchoring the terror is the exquisite special effects work by icon Rob Bottin, pushing the limits of technique and fear. Kurt Russel stars as RJ MacReady solidifying each turn with his aloof manner and steely gaze. Rounding out the cast, vulnerable in this wintry isolation, are Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Charles Callahan, and Donald Moffat. As the tagline warns, it could be “Anytime. Anywhere. Anyone.”
