ASERT Spotlight: Honor Randall, LCSW

Honor Randall is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Behavioral Health Therapist for ASERT’s Western Region. She previously developed the UPMC Psych Rehab pilot program for autism, and now trains other clinicians to support adults with autism in their programs. She also conducts adult diagnostic evaluations for autism and outpatient therapy.

What is Psych Rehab and why is it beneficial to individuals with ASD?

Psych Rehab focuses on skill building in social, independent living, wellness, work, and education domains through group, individual and mobile supports. This covers all the major areas where someone with ASD may struggle when they are gaining independence. Psych Rehab offers flexibility in pace and approach, where sessions can potentially be 30 minutes or several hours depending on their goals. The model offers a lot of opportunity for real life experience, observation and feedback. At Psych Rehab clients are in complete control of their goals and the focus of their support. This is a great framework to use with an adult with ASD when encouraging them to be confident, independent, and self-motivated.

What led you to this career path?

Everyone is an artist in my family and seeing the world differently was always valued and a source of pride. I was drawn to the perspective and strengths of individuals on the spectrum that others might ignore or reject for being unexpected.

What is the best part of your job?

The surprising revelations and victories I get to be a part of with my clients make it an adventure. Lately, it has been a lot of fun training other clinicians and seeing them have these moments, too.
